UN ends no-fly zone over Libya

6:08 am on 28 October 2011

The United Nations Security Council has voted to end the no-fly zone over Libya and its mandate authorising military operations by NATO.

Earlier, the National Transitional Council had asked the UN to delay the move.

The BBC reports the Libyan envoy to the UN said the NTC needed more time to assess its security needs.

NATO operations will now end at 11.59pm (Libyan time) on 31 October.

During its seven-month campaign, the alliance carried out some 26,000 sorties and almost 10,000 strike missions.
