Sewing machine tax sparks clash

11:33 am on 28 October 2011

About 600 people in eastern China have clashed with police in a dispute about taxation on sewing machines.

Nearly 30 people are reported to have been arrested.

The BBC reports the trouble broke out in Huzhou when the owner of a children's clothing firm refused to pay his tax bill.

Huzhou is a textiles centre known as the City of Silk.

Zhejiang Online, a government news portal covering Zhejiang province, said the unrest began on Wednesday and continued into Thursday.

The website said a group of about 100 people swarmed toward government offices in Huzhou's Zhili township, throwing stones, destroying street lights, and smashing car windows.

Officials contacted on Thursday said the situation was now calming down.
