Art experts have confirmed that a painting found in a cupboard in southeast England is by the 17th-century Spanish artist Diego Velazquez.

It was discovered after several works by a 19th-century British artist, Matthew Shepperson, were consigned for sale last year.

Further examination and an x-ray confirmed the work to be Velazquez.

The painting is to be sold at auction in December. AFP reports Bonhams auction house expects it to fetch up to €3.4 million ($5.86 million).
