Qantas engineers to take industrial action

3:09 pm on 13 November 2009

Qantas is advising customers there will be no disruption to flights or check-ins, despite a strike by some engineers in Australia from Friday evening.

Members of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia will take industrial action over pay from 5pm local time.

The airline says domestic and international passengers can still travel with confidence under its contingency plan.

However, a union warns some planes cannot take off if a senior engineer does not give the aircraft the all-clear.

The national carrier employs 190 professional engineers, who are senior maintenance staff and responsible for the airworthiness of its fleet. Overall, the Qantas engineering workforce is about 5,500 people.

A union spokesperson says engineers will refuse to work overtime or take calls outside of normal work hours.

Qantas and Jetstar flights stand to be affected by the industrial action.
