Soldiers and civilians wounded in Kabul attack

8:52 pm on 13 November 2009

A car bomb has exploded near a NATO convoy just outside a US military base in Kabul, wounding civilian contractors, foreign soldiers and Afghan bystanders.

No total has been given for the casualties.

A senior Kabul police official says a suicide bomber drove his car into a convoy of civilian vehicles just outside Camp Phoenix, a large US military base near the Afghan capital's airport.

The vehicle was heading towards Camp Phoenix, one of the main bases used by Western troops in Kabul.

NATO did not identify the nationalities of the foreign troops or contractors.

Violence in Afghanistan this year has reached the worst levels of the eight-year-old war, and militants have staged a number of attacks in the capital in recent months.
