Indian bridge collapse leaves dozens missing

1:12 pm on 30 October 2011

Police in a remote region of north-east India say at least 30 people are feared to have drowned after a foot bridge across a river collapsed.

Witnesses say many of those killed were women and children.

Security forces say they rescued more than 20 people from the fast flowing Kameng River in Arunachal Pradesh.

The BBC is reporting that the villagers were setting out to hunt when the suspension bridge structure gave way beneath them.

The incident is the second fatal bridge collapse in India within a week.

Last week, 32 people died in the north eastern district of Darjeeling when a bridge there collapsed.
