Yemen air base explosions set jets ablaze

1:58 pm on 31 October 2011

Four explosions have set two fighter jets on fire at an air base in Yemen's capital Sanaa.

The al-Daylami base is next to Sanaa International Airport which has been temporarily closed as a precaution.

Residents of the airport district have reported loud explosions and massive flames and plumes of smoke.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and no claims of responsibility for an attack.

For months, troops in Sanaa loyal to President Abdullah Saleh have been fighting tribesmen supporting protesters who march each day, demanding an end to his 33-year rule.

Four people, including three children, were reportedly killed overnight when troops shelled the Arhab region north of the capital, hitting a petrol station.

The United Nations Security Council issued a resolution on 22 October deploring the fighting and calling on Mr Saleh to leave office in line with an agreed transition plan.

Since the uprising began in January, Mr Saleh has survived an assassination attempt and has three times agreed to sign a transition plan to leave office, only to back out at the last minute.
