Early snowfalls kill six

An early snowstorm has hit the east coast of the US, with at least six people dying in snow-related accidents.

States of emergency have been declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.

The BBC reports communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit, with 68 cms of snow falling in some areas.

More than three million homes have lost their electricity supply, with some residents warned they may be without power for several days.

The forecast is for temperatures to return to normal by the middle of the week.
