US immigration officials say they have dismantled a huge Mexican drug trafficking ring after a 17-month investigation.

In all, 76 suspects have been arrested and huge quantities of drugs and arms seized in a series of raids.

The BBC reports that the network was linked to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.

Officials say the ring used backpackers and vehicles to smuggle marijuana, cocaine and heroin to a value of more than $US40 million a month across Arizona's western desert.
