Ireland demands replay of World Cup qualifier

8:43 am on 20 November 2009

Ireland is demanding that football's world governing body FIFA order a rematch of its World Cup qualifier against France.

France booked their place in next year's finals with a one-all draw in Paris only after striker Thierry Henry handled the ball in the build-up to their goal in extra time. The goal gave France a 2-1 aggregate win.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) says the blatantly incorrect decision by the referee to award the goal damages the integrity of the sport.

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen supported the call for a replay and said he would discuss the issue with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Brussels where they were attending a summit.

The BBC reports that France's Prime Minister Francois Fillon said the Irish government should not interfere in footballing decisions.
