Asylum seekers escape

11:07 am on 5 November 2011

Indonesian police say nine of the asylum seekers who survived this week's boat accident off the island of Java have escaped from immigration detention.

The ABC reports they were being held at a hotel in the town of Ciamis when they climbed the back wall on Thursday night and fled.

Police suspect they may have been helped in their escape by residents.

Eight people died when a nine-metre wooden boat carrying about 60 asylum seekers started taking on water off the coast of west Java on Tuesday morning.

No bodies have been found since Tuesday night.
