Military HQ target for bombers

1:25 pm on 5 November 2011

Suicide bombers in Nigeria have targeted the headquarters of the military and secret service in the northern city of Maiduguri.

The Army blamed the Islamist Boko Haram group for the attacks.

Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Mohammed said a black 4x4 vehicle packed with explosives was detonated about 50m from the entry to the JTF complex.

Two other explosions were reported about the time of Friday prayers, as people were preparing for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

The BBC reports the attacks followed a special operation by the security services in the city to mop up illegal weapons.

There were house-to-house searches this week looking for arms after the deadline for a gun amnesty expired on 31 October.
