Sale of fur clothing to be outlawed in West Hollywood

A tiny Californian municipality has become the first in the United States to ban the sale of fur clothing within its limits.

The five-member West Hollywood City Council voted 3-1 with one abstention to approve the measure, which will take effect in 2013.

The ban has been strongly opposed by the local chamber of commerce and the fur industry, whose main trade group, the Fur Information Council of America, is based in West Hollywood.

The council, however, sided with the argument that furs are produced from animals that are inhumanely killed for their pelts.
