Cut in govt trinkets ordered

US President Barack Obama has ordered government departments to reduce the number of branded mugs, T-shirts and key rings they give away.

Such items, known as swag, are used by the federal government to promote its work.

In an executive order signed on Wednesday, government departments were also ordered to issue staff with fewer electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers.

The BBC reports it is part of a push to cut the cost of running Washington by $US4 billion.

Other promotional items such as water bottles, watches and neckties are on the block, too.

No figure was put by the White House on what these official trinkets currently cost.
