An image of the Rhine by German artist Andreas Gursky has fetched $US4.3 million at Christie's New York, setting an auction record for a photograph.

Rhein II was created in 1999 as one of an edition of six works.

Others in the series hang at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London.

The BBC reports the print had a pre-sale estimate of $US2.5-3.5 million.

AFP reports Gursky's photographs are known as big, bold and rich in colour and detail.
