Lone Turkish ferry hijacker reported killed

7:15 pm on 12 November 2011

Turkish officials say security forces have killed a lone assailant who hijacked a ferry with about 20 passengers on board in northwest Turkey.

Earlier reports said up to five suspected Kurdish militants armed with explosives carried out the hijacking 12 hours earlier.

Turkish commandos on coastguard vessels tracked the high-speed ferry in the Sea of Marmara before it ran low on fuel and had to anchor west of Istanbul.

Istanbul's governor says the crew and passengers are all safe and the identity of the hijacker, who was carrying explosives, is still being determined.
