Former captain Mike Tindall has been dropped from England's elite rugby squad for his off-field behavour in New Zealand during the Rugby World Cup, and fined about $50,000.

The England Rugby Football Union says it took action over a night in Queenstown that made headlines when Tindall was caught on closed-circuit TV with a woman at a bar.

He admitted to misleading officials when initially questioned about the evening.

The union says Tindall's actions amount to a very serious breach of the squad's code of conduct.

The Rugby Players' Association says he will appeal against the fine.

Flanker James Haskell and winger Chris Ashton have been sanctioned for inappropriate behaviour towards a female staff member at a Dunedin hotel.
