A Sydney court has found a former American Marine guilty of the stabbing murder of a New Zealand born nurse, Michelle Beets.

Walter Marsh, who is 51, had worked with Ms Beets at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital until his contract was not renewed in early 2010.

She was was a nursing manager at the hospital's emergency department.

The 57-year-old was murdered outside her Chatswood home as she was returning from work in April 2010.

Prosecutors say Marsh, an American citizen, killed Ms Beets because she had given him bad employment references.

The ABC reports that Marsh appeared calm when the verdict was announced, taking a sip of water, removing his glasses and putting them in their case.
