Guinea leader injured in assassination bid

9:43 pm on 4 December 2009

The leader of the military government of Guinea, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, has been injured in an assassination attempt.

Government officials in the west African nation say Captain Camara was shot by a member of his own military guard but national television says his life is not in danger.

Communication minister Idrissa Cherif has named aide-de-camp Aboubacar "Toumba" Diakite as being behind the attack.

Mr Cherif says Captain Camara, who took power in a bloodless coup last year, was at a military camp when the shooting occurred.
