A bushfire in the US state of Nevada has destroyed 25 homes and forced nearly 10,000 people to leave the area.

One man died fleeing his home and 16 were hospitalised in a fire that has spread over 800 hectares. A state of emergency was declared by several agencies.

The BBC reports the fire is now contained after falling snow helped to put out the flames.

Residents who did not immediately have to evacuate were told to stay indoors after smoke engulfed the area, and as some 450 firefighters battled to contain the Caughlin Fire in south-west Reno.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that 25 houses had been affected.

According to the paper, Reno fire chief Mike Hernandez declined to speculate on what caused the fire or where it started.
