The Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico is discharging a plume of ash 3km into the air, near the capital, Mexico City.

Puebla civil protection director Jesus Morales said on Sunday that no incandescent lava was flowing from the crater.

The military has a 12km security radius around the volcano.

Popocatepetl is Mexico's biggest volcano and second highest peak at 5500 metres.
