Passengers on a regional rail service in Australia were stranded late on Saturday night when their train ran out of fuel.

The 11.45pm (AEDT) service from Melbourne to Bendigo ran out of fuel at Kyneton station, in central Victoria.

The ABC reports replacement buses could not be found in the middle of the night, so passengers had to wait three hours for another train.

V/Line says about 50 passengers were affected.
