Bahrain admits "excessive force" was used by security forces against pro-democracy protesters earlier this year.

At least 24 people died during the protests last February and March.

A government information agency said 20 members of the security forces have been charged.

The unrest began on 14 February, led by Shia Muslims protesting about economic hardship, lack of political freedom and discrimination in jobs in favour of Sunni Muslims.

A state of emergency was imposed on 16 March when troops from Saudi Arabia arrived.

Hospitals were sealed off and medics were beaten as they tried to help the wounded in the streets.

The state of emergency was lifted by King Hamad on 1 June.

A retrial was ordered last month for 20 medics after they were given prison sentences of up to 15 years.
