Holiday shopping turns violent in the United States

4:16 pm on 26 November 2011

Several shootings and two pepper sprayings have marred the start of America's holiday shopping season.

The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, when many retailers move out of the red and into the black.

This year Black Friday got a whole new meaning, with several violent incidents as bargain hunters stampeded stores.

The BBC is reporting that the incidents, including at least two robberies, mostly took place at branches of chain store Walmart.

Police in Los Angeles say a woman left 20 people with minor injuries when she used pepper spray on her fellow shoppers in a race for Xboxes.

Several shootings were reported around the country, including in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where there was a gunfight in the aisles.

A witness says young men started fighting and soon afterwards there was a popping sound as the shooting began and people scattered everywhere.

Half the entire US population is expected to hit the shops this weekend.
