Arab League preparing to impose sanctions on Syria

9:34 pm on 27 November 2011

Members of the Arab League have drafted a list of economic sanctions to impose on Syria, after a meeting in Cairo.

The BBC reports the proposals include the halting of dealings with the Syrian central bank, suspension of commercial flights and a travel ban on senior officials.

Arab ministers are to vote on the proposals on Sunday to punish Syria for its continuing brutal crackdown on protesters.

Syria has accused the league of meddling in its affairs. In a letter, foreign minister Walid al-Muallem said it was seeking to "internationalise" the conflict.

The league threatened Syria with sanctions earlier this month after President Bashar al-Assad repeatedly failed to implement steps to end the crackdown, including allowing international observers to enter Syria.

A draft document drawn up by the league's social and economic committee on Saturday, requires the support of two thirds of foreign ministers.

It also includes the freezing of all Syrian assets in Arab countries.

The United Nations estimates that more than 3500 people have died since protests against the Syrian government began in March.
