American Samoa to establish tsunami memorial

9:15 pm on 14 December 2009

The government in American Samoa is planning to establish a park as a memorial to the 34 people killed by a tsunami there on 29 September.

The Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says the park on Government land in Vaitogi village will be named 9/29 Park.

Tsunami victims will also be remembered this week during this year's Territorial Christmas Programme, which takes as its theme The Spirit of Survival: Moving On.

Governor Togiola says the government workers will not have to wear uniforms during the Christmas programme, as has been the practice in the past, because he does not want to place an extra burden on families.
