Prison sentences imposed

12:05 pm on 28 November 2011

A court in the United Arab Emirates has imposed prison sentences on five democracy activists on charges of insulting the state's leaders on a website.

A prominent blogger and four other defendants will spend up to three years in prison.

Their trial began in June and lasted five months. Sentences were delivered on Sunday.

The court also ordered the closure of the website. The five were arrested in April for urging public protest and disrupting public order.

The UAE has seen none of the public protests that have swept Arab countries over the last 10 months.
