Campaign of state sterilisation claimed in Peru

Human rights groups say more than 2000 women in Peru were sterilised by the state often without them knowing what was being done or without their consent.

The procedures took place under the presidency of Alberto Fujimori, 15 years ago.

CNN says the government reportedly started the campaign to reduce poverty by lowering the birth rate and the actual number of forced sterilisations could be much higher.

Quotas and incentives were offered to doctors and nurses to sterilise three women per month.

The government denies it was targetting rural women in poor communities.
