Film director Ken Russell dies

British film director Ken Russell, who was Oscar-nominated for his 1969 film Women In Love, has died at the age of 84.

His son, Alex, said he died in a hospital on Sunday, peacefully in his sleep, the BBC reports.

During his career, he became known for his controversial films including Women In Love, featuring Oliver Reed and Alan Bates wrestling nude and The Devils.

Music played a central role in many of his films including The Music Lovers in 1970, and The Who's rock opera Tommy and Lisztomania in 1975.
