Tender process for public cyclone shelters

11:22 am on 29 November 2011

Contractors have been selected to tender for 10 public cyclone shelters in Queensland, which will cost $A60 million.

State Building Industry Minister Simon Finn says more than 20 contractors, with offices in Cairns, Weipa, Innisfail, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton, are on the tender list for eight of the 10 public shelters.

The ABC reports half of the funding is being provided through a donation from Abu Dhabi.

The contracts are expected to be awarded before the end of the year. All 10 shelters are due for completion in time for the 2012-13 cyclone season.
