Missile test conducted by Iran

3:54 pm on 17 December 2009

Iran says it has successfully test fired one of its most advanced missiles, which is believed to be capable of reaching Israel and much of the Middle East.

Television pictures showed the launch of the Seijil-2 rocket.

The BBC reports it is not the first time the missile has been tested, but the timing is likely to add to current tension over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The West says Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

The United States said the test "undermined Iran's claims of peaceful intentions".

The Seijil Two missile is thought to have a range of at least 2000km.
