Police in the US state of Virginia say the man who shot dead a police officer and then killed himself at Virginia Tech University was not a student at the university.
A spokesperson for the state police says the man shot Officer Deriek Crouse after his car was pulled over during a routine traffic check, then fled and turned his gun on himself.
Police say they believe the gunman did not know Officer Crouse.
They also say they believe they know who the gunman is but will not release his name until his identity has been officially confirmed and his next-of-kin notified.
