Tabloid no longer blamed for deleting girl's voicemails

A media ethics inquiry in Britain has been told the News of the World tabloid was probably not responsible for deleting voicemail messages from the phone of a murdered schoolgirl in March 2002.

The ABC reports a policeman who worked on the case told the inquiry in London that the messages were probably deleted automatically when they expired after 72 hours.

The News of the World closed after the Guardian reported it was responsible.
