10:57 pm on 14 December 2011

A strong earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, but no tsunami warning has been issued and there are no immediate reports of damage.

The US Geological Survey says the 7.3-magnitude quake hit about 3pm local time and was centred near Lae, the country's second-largest city, at a depth of about 115km, Reuters reports.

Residents in the capital Port Moresby, 223km from the epicentre, also reported feeling the tremor.

Initially, the quake was reported to have struck under the sea.

Papua New Guinea sits on the geographically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
