Arrests in Turkey over alleged assassination plot

9:39 am on 27 December 2009

The Turkish army says it has detained eight soldiers over an alleged plot to assassinate the deputy prime minister.

The BBC reports the arrests follow an investigation which was launched last week after the deputy prime minister said a car carrying two officers had been spotted several times near his house.

The army has issued a statement saying the soldiers were taken to the military headquarters in Ankara after being interrogated by a civilian prosecutor.
