China has sent human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng back to prison for three years.

Xinhua news agency reported on Friday that he had violated the rules of his probation from an earlier conviction for subversion.

Gao was previously sentenced to three years in prison in 2006, and placed on probation for five years instead.

Xinhua said a court in Beijing "withdrew probation" on Gao and sent him back to jail. It gave no details of his whereabouts or his health.
