The Sudanese army says it has killed the leader of Darfur's main rebel group.

The military says Khalil Ibrahim was killed in fighting in the Wad Banda area in North Kordofan.

The report could not be independently verified.

Mr Ibrahim founded the Justice and Equality Movement and made it the most powerful and most heavily armed rebel group in Darfur, the BBC reports.

He had returned from exile in Libya after the fall of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime this year.

Attacks launched by the Justice and Equality Movement include one on the capital, Khartoum, in 2008 in which more than 220 people were killed.
