At least 17 people have been killed and many injured by an explosion in the city of Yangon, (Rangoon) in Myanmar.

The BBC reports the blast happened around 2am on Thursday in a compound of warehouses in the east of the former capital. The cause is not known.

The warehouses were said to contain chemicals as well as material connected to the construction industry and salt production.

The fire spread quickly from the warehouse to nearby wooden houses.
