Petrol sales to be limited to curb fires

5:52 am on 30 December 2011

France is to limit sales of petrol on New Year's Eve in a bid to curb an annual 'tradition' of setting hundreds of cars ablaze.

Hundreds of vehicles in depressed suburbs of French cities have been set alight on New Year's Eve since the early 1990s.

More than 1000 vehicles are torched every year.

Police say it has become a competition to see which area can cause the most damage and they will no longer release figures for the number of vehicles set on fire.
