Sea Shepherd says one of its anti-whaling vessels, which became damaged in the Southern Ocean, is now being escorted to Western Australia for repairs.

The Brigitte Bardot with 10 crew on board was chasing a Japanese whaling ship in six metre swells when a wave crashed into the port side of the vessel, cracking its hull.

Sea Shepherd head Paul Watson says the flagship Steve Irwin took 18 hours to reach the damaged vessel.

The Steve Irwin is now escorting the Brigitte Bardot to Fremantle.

Watson says the voyage should take five to six days.
