Call for Arab League to get out of Syria

8:41 am on 2 January 2012

An Arab League advisory body has called for the immediate withdrawal of the bloc's observers from Syria, saying their presence is having no impact on the abuse and killing of innocent Syrian civilians.

The league has sent a team of observers to Syria to check whether President Bashar al-Assad is keeping his promise to end a deadly crackdown on a nine-month uprising against his rule, AFP reports.

The Arab Parliament, an 88-member advisory committee of delegates from each of the league's member states, says the violence is continuing to claim many victims.

The parliament says the actions of the Assad regime are a clear violation of Arab League protocol.
