New Zealand lawyer Peter Williams, QC, who is defending a jailed critic of the Fijian regime, says he hopes she will be home on bail on Wednesday.

Mere Samisoni and three others were seized by the military on Friday and charged with inciting violence against the government.

Mr Williams applied for bail for Dr Samisoni on Tuesday and expects a decision will be made on her release on Wednesday morning.

He says the 73-year-old has been kept in terrible conditions in jail since Friday and has been interrogated every day.

Mr Williams says the court was crowded inside and outside with her supporters.

He says the Crown indicated in court they had evidence against Dr Samisoni and they opposed bail because of the seriousness of the offence.
