British police have launched a major investigation after human remains were discovered in woodland on the Sandringham Estate, the Queen's country home in Norfolk.

The remains of the body were found by a member of the public walking their dog on Sunday and the area has since been sealed off to allow forensic experts to examine the site.

The operation was kept secret for 24 hours to allow detectives to work and a large area has been sealed off, a Radio New Zealand correspondent reports.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are staying at Sandringham for their Christmas break and were reportedly informed of the discovery on Monday night.

Detectives are trying to establish the identity of the remains.
