A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on Wednesday.
The quake was located 420km southwest of Banda Aceh at a depth of 29km, the US Geological Survey said, and occurred at 12.37am local time.
Local people in Banda Aceh ran away in panic from buildings after news of the quake, a witness told the Reuters news agency.
No major damage in the provincial capital was seen, witnesses said.
Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami alert, which it later lifted, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no destructive widespread tsunami threat.
A 2004 quake off Aceh created a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people.
