UN warns thousands more will die in Somalia famine

The head of the United Nations humanitarian operations in Somalia says many more people will die of hunger before the famine there is brought under control.

A crisis was declared in Somalia six months ago and the levels of need are expected to remain high until July or August.

UN aid chief Mark Bowden told the BBC malnutrition rates there are the highest in the world and 250,000 Somalis were still suffering from the famine.

Last year, tens of thousands of people fled rural areas - many over the borders to Ethiopia and Kenya - in search of food.

The UN is calling for additional funds to replenish flocks of sheep, goats and camels so people can re-build their lives.

Somalia has not had a functioning central government for more than 20 years.
