A man is dead and another remains in a serious condition in an Australian hospital after a boating accident on the Swan River.

Police say two men were riding in a rubber ski 'biscuit' being towed behind a boat, when they hit a navigational marker near Windan Bridge in Burswood on Thursday, the ABC reports.

A man in his early 20s died at the scene and his friend was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

Police and marine investigators from the Department of Transport have taken over the investigation.
