A team from the Arab League has completed its month long mission in Syria to establish whether the government is keeping its promise to stop using force against protesters.
The Arab League is due to decide this weekend whether to extend its mission.
Although the mandate of the observer mission came to an end formally on Thursday, the agreement covering it provides for an extension for a second month if both sides agree.
The BBC reports that so far there has been no suggestion from Damascus that the monitors should be withdrawn.
Last week, the Arab League said the observers would remain in 17 different places around Syria until a final decision is made.
