A blind woman has saved the life of a Melbourne taxi driver who suffered a heart attack.

Judy Streit was getting out of the cab at the Doncaster shopping centre when the driver stumbled out of the vehicle and collapsed on the footpath.

The ABC reports he had suffered a cardiac arrest and was gasping for help.

Ms Streit called emergency services and followed an operator's instructions on how to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.

The driver is now in a rehabilitation facility after spending a week in intensive care.

The Victorian Government has praised Ms Streit, with the Health Minister nominating her for a local hero award.
