Researchers performing the world's first human trial using embryonic stem cells to treat diseases of the eye say early results suggest the method is safe.
Advanced Cell Technology, an American company, says retinal tissue derived from human embryonic stem cells was implanted into the eyes of two visually impaired women, who showed no ill effects after four months.
Both women, who are registered as blind, noticed some improvement in their vision.
But the BBC reports that experts caution that years of tests still lie ahead to prove the technique is entirely safe and effective.
