The International Atomic Energy Agency is to open an office in the Fukushima region in Japan to monitor efforts to contain the nuclear disaster there.

The ABC reports the UN agency was asked to set up the office by the government.

A nuclear power station in Fukushima Daiichi was wrecked by the tsunami which followed the magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Japan on 11 March. Nuclear radiation was discharged.
